Colombia Fieldwork
Summer 2023
In summer 2023, PhD student, Prothama went to Colombia for her field work on the hippo. She worked with CORNARE and a field team to help her in the data collection on the Magdalena riverbank. She had collected scat samples of the hippo population near Doradal, Antioquia department to quantify their current genetic diversity. This work was funded by the Ohio University Student Enhancement Award and OCEES fellowship.
Visitor from Ecuador
Spring 2023
This spring semester, our lab was visited by Nicolas Tinoco! During Nicolas's stay, he worked on multiple Ecuador samples and learned Next Gen Sequencing while organizing and identifying small terrestrial animals from Ecuador. Nicolas is still assisting Dr. Alvarado-Serrano in various fieldwork studies in Ecuador.
Thanks Nicolas! Looking forward to many collaborations in the future! |
Job alert! Lab tech opening
11/07/2022
11/07/2022
I’m hiring a Lab Tech for my lab, which focuses on evolutionary genomics of non-model organisms. Great opportunity to hone NGS and genomic skills in a supportive environment. The main duties of this position will be processing samples for extraction of high-quality DNA and RNA, PCR amplifications for DNA barcoding, processing and analysis of Sanger sequences, and preparation of genomic libraries for a wide range of organisms and tissue types. Additionally, the person selected would participate in carrying on basic bioinformatic pipelines for assembly and variant discovery and assist in managing the day-to-day operation of the lab. Lake Erie Fieldwork
Summer 2022
During June 2022, Marissa and her PACE Assistant Zac Wigington surveyed 17 sites on 11 islands for Lake Erie Watersnakes and 11 sites on the mainland shores of western Lake Erie for Northern Watersnakes. Over the course of the month, they hand captured over 200 snakes in both Ohio and Ontario and collected blood and/or tissue samples from 127 specimens. After the field season, these samples were used to study the population genetics of the Lake Erie Watersnake using double digest restriction enzyme associated DNA (ddRAD).
The lab is officially open and recruiting!
08/26/2019
I am currently recruiting undergraduate and graduate students to join the lab. Depending on interest and previous experience, there is the potential to participate in a variety of projects (from computational research to fieldwork to molecular lab work, or a combination thereof).
Interested? If so, please Contact me to discuss opportunities. Also, check out information about the Biological Sciences Department, the Graduate Program (application deadline January 8, 2020) , and the City of Athens and all it has to offer.

Successful move

After 5 and a half hours (one hour lost to Columbus traffic at 6:30am!) myself and all the DNA samples arrived safely to Ohio University, where I am starting a position as an Assistant Professor in the Biological Sciences Department. For the time being, all specimens I collected and those under loan to me would remain at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, but they will still be readily available for research in the lab.
